Mrs. Opal Irene Johnston

Mrs. Opal Irene Johnston, a resident of Pine Knoll in Carrollton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, at the age of 97. Mrs. Johnston was born on August 22, 1928, in Roanoke, Alabama, to the late Jim and Lizzie Mitchell Smith. Throughout her long and well-lived life, she was known for her strong faith, dedication to her family, and quiet, hardworking spirit. A faithful member of Sardis Baptist Church, she found great comfort and strength in her relationship with the Lord and in the fellowship of her church family. Mrs. Johnston spent many years working as a seamstress for BBI, where her skill, patience, and attention to detail were evident in everything she did. She took pride in her work and exemplified the values of diligence and perseverance. Beyond her career, she devoted herself to caring for her family, always placing the needs of her loved ones before her own. She will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle nature, and the love she shared with generations of family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, A.D. Simmons and Bobby Johnston; her children, Virginia Philips and Sidney Simmons; her granddaughter, Nichole Simmons; and her great-grandson, Justin Carl. She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory and the many lessons she imparted throughout her life. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Faye and Garland Loveless of Newell, Alabama, Dot and Alan Strickland of Carrollton, Billy and Tina Simmons of Bowdon, and Jackie and Carol Simmons of Woodland, Alabama. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jerry Evans, Braide Simmons, Christopher Simmons, Christy Simmons, and Cortney Scheiva; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous extended family members and friends who were blessed to know and love her. Though her family grieves her passing, they take comfort in a lifetime of treasured memories and in knowing that her legacy of faith, love, and devotion will continue through the generations she helped shape. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jay Herren officiating. Pallbearers will be Billy Simmons, Braide Simmons, Jerry Evans, Alan Strickland, Roger Mitchell, and Wilburn Smith. Interment will follow at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m
